Why wine in a can ?
Wine in a Can:
A New Era for an Ancient Tradition
Wine, a faithful companion of our civilization for millennia, has always evolved with its era. Terracotta amphorae, oak barrels, glass bottles, and now, bag-in-box (BIB)… At every stage, the container has transformed—not out of whim, but out of necessity and innovation. Today, at Domaine des Herbauges, we are writing a new chapter in this history with a bold step close to our hearts: wine in a can.
But why this approach, you might ask? For us, it’s not a fleeting trend or a mere marketing ploy. Our goal is to meet the needs of our time while honoring the heritage of wine. We chose this format to offer a practical, ecological, and responsible alternative, adapted to modern consumption habits, without ever compromising our commitment to quality.
A step towards a lighter carbon footprint
Did you know that the glass industry is the largest contributor of greenhouse gases in the wine sector?
In fact, nearly 40% of a winery’s carbon footprint comes from the glass bottle. A standard lightweight glass wine bottle weighs about 500 grams when empty.
When filled with 750 milliliters of wine (approximately 750 grams), its total weight reaches 1,250 grams. In comparison, three full cans of wine weigh 750 grams.
The carbon footprint of a glass wine bottle is estimated at 350 grams of CO₂. Aluminum cans, on the other hand, have a carbon footprint approximately 72 times lower than that of glass bottles. Thus, by replacing a glass bottle with a can, around 345 grams of CO₂ are saved per unit.
Aluminum, with its more widespread and accessible recycling compared to glass, plays a crucial role in waste reduction. Globally, recycling infrastructures for aluminum surpass those for glass, allowing each can to enjoy a quick and efficient second life.
At Domaine des Herbauges, we have invested in a state-of-the-art pilot packaging line, the “GAI 3621 FE CAN,” the first of its kind in France.
This next-generation technology enables us to package our wines directly at the estate while preserving their purity and balance. It’s a perfect marriage of innovation and respect for the product and tradition.
A new way to enjoy wine
Wine in a can is not meant to replace the sacred ritual of a glass bottle shared around a meal. Instead, it aligns with the evolution of consumption habits. Imagine: a seaside getaway, a picnic in the forest, or a quiet evening on your balcony. Who hasn’t dreamed of enjoying a good glass of wine, easy to carry and savor? The can is the perfect answer for those moments when the desire for wine doesn’t quite match the need to open an entire bottle.
It’s also an ideal solution for those who want to enjoy one or two glasses—alone or with a companion—without waste. Perfect for small weekday indulgences or more nomadic consumption. Just as craft beer has successfully embraced this format, wine, too, can claim these everyday moments without losing a drop of quality.
Beyond the Container, What Matters Most is the Content
At Domaine des Herbauges, every wine is crafted with care, from vine to can. Our priority is to offer you authentic pleasure, wherever you are, while respecting the earth by adopting more sustainable paths.
Wine in a can is an invitation! A way to honor our heritage while looking toward the future. We firmly believe that it’s possible to combine tradition and modernity, quality and convenience, pleasure and responsibility.
So, why not give it a try? You might be surprised at how much this little revolution can enhance your everyday moments.
